News and Welcome...

It is with great sadness that we tell you that, after a valiant 18 month fight, Peter succumbed to cancer on September 6, 2007. Peter was a native of San Francisco, born on April 4, 1956 of Marjorie and Richard Grey. He is survived by his wife and son, Vicki and Alec; along with his mother Marge and stepfather Richard Stevens; brother Chris and sister-inlaw Claudia and their family; and sister Jennifer and family. - Memorial Program -

Vicki has decided to continue Peter's website and his Machined Things business until his amazing artwork is gone. The family has saved the things most valued by them, and wishes to share the remaining art with all of you...

Now on to the regularly scheduled welcome...

Welcome to Machined Things! Machined Things was born out of my appreciation of neat machines. I admire any piece of machinery – bicycles to boats, industrial machines to toys – that shows elegance of design and a high level of craftsmanship in its construction. I’ve tried to capture the aesthetic of these machines, and to build things that are useful as well as elegant and fun to look at.

Everything you see here has been crafted using manual machine tools in my shop – no CNC “machining centers” played a part in production. Everything on this site is what it appears to be. If it looks like a hunk of aluminum, it is a hunk of aluminum, not a piece of aluminum sheet that’s formed in a way to look more substantial. If it looks like it should move, pivot, or rotate, it will. And while the surfaces are smooth, I’ve intentionally finished the pieces in a way that accentuates the machined property of the metal.

I hope you enjoy browsing. I will regularly add pieces to the galleries, so come back often. Feel free to contact me with questions or comments or if you’d like to have something special done.

Thanks,
